Diagnosing Bias
Visual Essays
A long-form scroll narrative on medical misogyny patterns for the purpose of completing my Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication (Honours)
A woman in pain has always been problematic. There are well documented patterns of women not being taken seriously or being misdiagnosed, especially when it comes to pain, reproductive health, and chronic conditions. This is more than frustration, this is a systemic problem. Medical Misogyny is a relatively new term but completely encompasses the unconscious bias that leads to women suffering. Women deserve to be heard, believed, and treated with the urgency and respect that their health requires.
I’d like to introduce you to three women who have each experienced a long and strenuous journey to seek treatment. The following characters are 100% fabricated, but their stories are constructed entirely from peer-reviewed and clinically published research. All medical history data is cited from various medical journals that were gathered as a year-long university research and design project on medical misogyny.
